“My family and I hosted Magdalena from Spain during the 2022–2023 school year. While we had some bumps along the way, overall it was an incredibly meaningful experience for all of us. Our two sons loved having a “big sister” and still miss her every day. Even now, little things—like certain songs on the radio, foods she didn’t like, or her favorite fast food spots—bring back those memories and always make us smile.
Since then, we’ve also welcomed two other students on a short-term/emergency basis, and those experiences have been just as rewarding. Hosting exchange students brings a broader worldview into our home and helps our boys understand that there’s so much more beyond what they see every day in the United States.
What excites me most about BFF’s mission is the opportunity to create those same meaningful connections for other families and students. I love being part of something that builds understanding across cultures and truly expands perspectives—for both the students and the families who welcome them.
As mentioned previously, gaining a broader worldview and seeing the United States through a different perspective is incredibly valuable. These teenagers bring so much excitement and passion for cultural exchange into our homes, which makes the experience both meaningful and rewarding.
My family has been fortunate to host three students, and I’ve also had the opportunity to supervise other students over the past couple of years through a different organization. Through these experiences, we’ve learned so much about other cultures—both the similarities and the differences—which has led to more open-mindedness, curiosity, and understanding in our home.
Beyond our family, I’ve seen how exchange students positively impact the wider community as well. They build friendships at school, share their cultures with peers and teachers, and bring a fresh perspective that encourages others to think more globally. These connections help break down stereotypes and create a more welcoming, inclusive environment.
Overall, this program enriches not just the students, but the families and communities who welcome them. It fosters meaningful relationships, cultural understanding, and lasting memories that extend far beyond the exchange itself.
I began my journey by hosting with one organization and later became a local coordinator for another, so BFF is now the third organization I’ve had the privilege of being part of. I’m incredibly excited to be here and to continue growing in this role.
I look forward to getting to know many of you, working together, and learning from one another. I’m grateful for the opportunity to be part of a community that is so passionate about cultural exchange and making a difference in students’ lives.”
