Gor is a talented FLEX scholar who joined the Roland family in New Mexico. Gor was kind enough to participate in a BFF interview, sharing his experience as an exchange student in the 2023-2024 academic year program.

The Interview:

What made you want to become an exchange student?

“I wanted to be an exchange student because I love traveling and experiencing new cultures. I also wanted to challenge myself to step outside of my comfort zone and learn more about the world beyond my own country. Plus, I saw it as an amazing opportunity to meet new people and make lifelong friends from different backgrounds. I believed that being an exchange student would allow me to gain a fresh perspective on my studies and life in general, and help me develop skills that I would use after.”

What is something unique about your home country?

“Something unique about my home country is its rich history and culture. Armenia has a distinctive alphabet, cuisine, and architecture that reflects its ancient traditions and heritage. The country is also known for its beautiful landscapes, including mountains, lakes, and valleys, as well as its vibrant arts scene and hospitable people. Additionally, Armenia has a strong tradition of science and technology, with many notable scientists and inventors hailing from the country.”

What has surprised you about your exchange experience so far?

“One thing that has really stood out to me during my exchange experience so far is the kindness and generosity of the people here. I was expecting some cultural differences and potential awkwardness, but everyone has been incredibly welcoming and open to me. From my host family to my classmates to complete strangers, everyone has gone out of their way to make me feel at home and included. For example, my host mom has been cooking me delicious traditional dishes every day.”

How has the experience changed your life so far?

“This experience has had a profound impact on my life, broadening my horizons and shaping me into a more open-minded and confident individual. Living in a foreign country has forced me to adapt to new customs, traditions, and ways of life, fostering a greater appreciation for the diversity that exists across the globe. I have learned to embrace the unfamiliar, whether it be trying new foods, participating in local festivals, or navigating uncharted territories.”

What would you like to tell a student that is considering participating in an exchange program?

“I would say, “Go for it!” Being an exchange student can be a life-changing experience that provides immense personal growth, cultural immersion, and unforgettable memories. It’s an opportunity to step outside your comfort zone, learn new languages, and form lasting connections with people from diverse backgrounds. Embrace the adventure, and you’ll return home with a newfound appreciation for the world and its endless possibilities.”
