During her exchange year, Muskan, a Pakistani YES scholar, lived in Denver, CO, with the Alloush-Daigherty family. Alongside her host sister, Monica, they have excelled as students and cultural ambassadors. Muskan shared her experience as an exchange student with Borderless Friends Forever. Here are her thoughts:

One of the first things that struck me about Denver is its vibrant cultural scene. From art galleries and museums to live music venues, there’s always something exciting happening. The city has a rich history, and I’ve had the privilege of exploring its diverse neighborhoods, each with its own character and charm.

Being an exchange student has provided me with an opportunity to immerse myself in the American way of life. The people here are incredibly welcoming, and I’ve formed lasting friendships with both fellow students and locals. Engaging in cultural exchange activities has been an enlightening experience, allowing me to share aspects of Pakistani culture while learning about the traditions and customs of my American friends.

Academically, the exchange program has provided a unique perspective on education. The dynamic learning environment, coupled with the diverse student body, has broadened my horizons and challenged me in ways I hadn’t anticipated. The support from professors and the emphasis on practical, hands-on learning have been invaluable to my personal and academic growth.

Living with a host family has been a cornerstone of my exchange experience. The warmth and generosity extended by my host family have made me feel not just welcomed, but truly embraced. Sharing meals, traditions, and daily life with them have provided insights into American family dynamics and created lasting bonds.

Participating in American cultural events and holidays has been an enlightening experience. From the Halloween to the Thanksgiving feast celebrations, each event has allowed me to partake in traditions that are both unique and deeply rooted in American history and culture.

Of course, challenges and adjustments are part of any exchange journey. Adapting to a new environment, understanding cultural nuances, and managing homesickness have been part of my growth process. However, the support and encouragement from both my host family and the school community have made these challenges manageable. In essence, my time in the USA as an exchange student has been transformative.

In conclusion, my time as an exchange student in Denver has been nothing short of transformative. I’ve not only gained academic insights but have also developed a deeper understanding of cultural diversity, formed lasting friendships, and created memories that will last a lifetime.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to share a glimpse of my experiences here in Denver. Thank you for being a part of my journey, and I look forward to sharing more insights upon my return.”
