A Place at the Table is an organization in the heart of downtown Raleigh that offers meals on a “pay-what-you-can” basis. People can pay the suggested price, pay less, or volunteer their time in exchange for food. This organization has always been willing to share its mission with our students. Some of our scholarship students reflected on their experience visiting with the non-profit.
“I learned that food insecurity affects many people, even those who have jobs or homes. I also learned that small acts, like volunteering or paying a little extra for your meal, can make a big difference for others.”
Alikhan from Kazakhstan
“What I liked most about visiting this place was seeing how it worked. I liked that people could help by volunteering and still get food. It showed me how important it is to help each other. I learned that small acts, like serving food or being kind, can make a big difference in someone’s life.“
Nana from Georgia
“In my home country, there are charities that give food to people in need, but they usually do it through donation events or food banks. It is less common to see a restaurant where people can work for a meal or where customers can buy tokens for others. So this nonprofit is more creative and community-focused.”
Leena from Thailand
“One of the things I enjoyed most about visiting the nonprofit was the welcoming, friendly environment. I liked seeing how people could choose what they wanted to eat instead of being handed something without options.”
Khongorzul from Mongolia
