Marie Walker, a mother and volunteer with Lee County’s high school theater department, shared a powerful story about the lasting impact exchange students can have on an entire community.
This year, Marie’s family formed a meaningful connection with Oleh from Ukraine and Konstantine from Germany. Their presence reached far beyond their host family, touching the lives of neighbors, classmates, and community members along the way.
Marie’s story is a beautiful reminder that the impact of cultural exchange extends well beyond the walls of a host family’s home. Through their kindness, involvement, and friendships, these two young men left a lasting impression on Marie, her son, and the broader Lee County community.
Here is her experience having Oleh and Konstantine in her life this year.
“If I start talking too much about these two, I will start crying, and I don’t know if I’ll be able to stop.
Because somehow, the introduction of two exchange students standing awkwardly in the cold food aisle at Walmart right before school started turned into two people who quietly became such a big part of everything.
I still remember that moment like it was nothing special at the time. Just a random meeting. Just another day. And yet… here we are.
Oleh and Konstantin are the kind of people who don’t need to announce anything to leave an impact. They just show up, stay kind, stay respectful, stay genuinely good in a way that’s rare and grounding. The sort of young men who make every backstage moment lighter without even trying.
And Liam? Where you found Oleh or Liam, the other wasn’t far behind. Oleh became his built-in best buddy almost instantly, as it had always been that way. The kind of friendship that doesn’t need explaining or forcing… it just exists, steady and real in the best big brother, little brother kind of way.
They’ve both been some of the sweetest, most considerate, and most hardworking students to have around. Always thoughtful, always present, always bringing joy into the chaos of everything happening around them.
And now, they’re heading back home soon, which feels unreal in the worst way. Like, how do you just casually accept that someone who became part of your life in the best way possible is about to be far away again?
So yeah… I’m not crying.”
